7 Tips to Organize Your Closet Like a Pro

April 11, 2022

It’s that time of the year where we say goodbye to #sweaterweather and bring out our Spring & Summer hues! In the past, the task of switching out my closet was a huge burden for me. Since owning our home, becoming organized and following a process has allowed me to not only complete the switch out within a few hours, but also make room for new pieces or the key items I wear regularly.

Never worry about organizing your closet again by following these easy steps and utilizing some amazing products to get you organized & maximize your space!

1: Declutter Current Items by Likeness & Category

Getting started is the most overwhelming part. A fast, easy way to best organize your previous season items is to sift through them by likeness and category to avoid frustration.

So, pull the things you know you definitely want to keep for next year and organize by categories like tops, dresses, pants, outerwear, accessories, and shoes.

Then, pull what’s left on your rack that you aren’t loving or also know you definitely won’t wear. If anything gives you reason to hesitate, add these to a sell or donate pile. I recommend using Poshmark to turn a profit — it has made me hundreds over the years. Use code QUIGME01 for $10 when you sign up! Or, Facebook Marketplace as another great option for selling.

2: Clean Your Closet

Now that you’ve pulled last seasons items, empty it with anything you keep as transitional, etc. so that you can take the opportunity to clean. Wipe everything down — I promise it’s worth the 10 minutes.

3: Gather Current Season Items

Now’s the time to pull all of your current season items out of storage to visualize what kind of space you need to create.

Depending on your closet size, budget, and level of effort – this will vary. We could definitely go all out with racks, shelving, bins, and more – but have pulled a few essentials to make it functional as this is not our forever home. However, I’m suggesting all the top products for those that need them at the end of this post!

Take note of your closet’s features — you may have a lot of vertical storage space, built-in shelving, or multiple hanging rods. Use these to your advantage.

For the areas of your closet that are lacking: your hard-to-reach upper shelves (or none at all), for example, figure out what you can do to fix or utilize those areas.

4: Store Your Items by Category

This may seem obvious to some, but this is the one step that truly makes all the difference in not only how your closet looks, but to staying clean and organized as you know exactly where to find everything. Organizing by category and then by color coordination is key. For example, I organize my items from left to right by sleeve length.

Store all your belts, bags, scarves, hats in the same spot. Organize your workout clothes in a different drawer from your lounge clothes, for example. More below on this.

5: Use Coordinating, Velvet Hangers

The difference between plastic, mismatched hangers and a consistent set of velvet hangers instantly elevates the look of your closet. In turn, this will make you feel better about the organization of your closet. There are many affordable options that make it worth it! Highly recommend the following:

6: Stack Thicker Items

Fold heavier sweaters and sweatshirts and place on a shelf so that they don’t become damaged by hangers. Similarly, store your jeans on a side shelf for easier access.

7: Roll t-shirts, pajamas, and workout clothes into drawers & bins

This is a great time to utilize a dresser, too. Casual t-shirts, pajamas, workout clothes, socks, undergarments – all great things to store in drawers or bins.

Shop my recommended closet organization products:

From boot stuffers, to dividers, and shoe racks (game changer) — all of these will help you reach your levels of desired organization without breaking the bank!
