6 Tips to Transition from Holiday to Winter

December 28, 2022

Whether your tree is down or not, we’ve all experienced the bare feeling of our homes after Christmas. Budgets are maxed out from all of the holiday spending, but the desire to make home feel fresh and comfortable into the new year is prevalent. I’ve got 6 tips to refresh your space and whether you take one tip, or all, your home will feel that much better to start 2023 off right!

1. Declutter & Simplify

This is always the best starting point as taking everything out can be overwhelming. Keeping some pieces that you identify as favorites gives you a base. Looking around and finding yourself with decor you don’t love? Take this time to sell or donate – start the year off fresh!

From there, find creative ways to store those must-haves items for your home. For example, in the living room, use jars or bins store tv remotes, or baskets to hold throws and toys.

It will feel VERY bare once the tree and decor is removed. Live with the space for a few days before rushing to fill walls. You’ll most likely find that you don’t need anything, just time to adjust.

2. Swap Greenery

Taking the tree down provides the largest gap in any space to fill. An easy way is to replace that space is with a fiddle leaf fig or the easy to keep alive, snake plant. If your resolution isn’t to become a green thumb, no worries, there are tons of great faux options!

The same sentiment follows, replace any other Christmas trees or stems with small plants. I do enjoy keeping out evergreens and pines, but things like flocked trees and lights will stand out as Christmas decor.

3. Highlight an Accent Piece

Though you may fill your tree area with a faux plant, you could also use this space to highlight a favorite piece of furniture. If you’re in a small space like me, you may even have to move a piece in the first place to make space for your tree.

Let’s say its a chair – consider adding in a small side table, a plush throw blanket, and a magazine rack. Work in 3’s to keep things clean.

4. Add Plush Textures for All the Cozy

This is always a tip of mine, but only because it truly makes all the difference! Adding a few new pillows or throws with some knit, plush texture and neutral tones will give you all the cozy immediately. Getting rid of red is a great step away from Christmas, but tones like dark green, navy and burnt oranges mixed with neutrals will carry you through winter.

5. Re-evaluate Wall Art

Sometimes the bare feeling can come from the walls. New art or mirrors can easily refresh a space as it provides a new focal point in the room. If you have an art shelf, rearranging a few pieces and swapping in 1-2 new can also do the trick!

6. Balance Whites & Woods

Lastly, fill in spaces like console tables and shelves with decor items. I’m obsessed with whites and woods, and mixing those textures in lamps, figurines, frames, bins, and more is a great way to neutralize your space for the winter season!

Additionally, mixing in gold tones and keeping winter items like birch logs and cinnamon sticks allow you to keep pieces of holiday decor you love without screaming Christmas!
