7 Tips to Create a Collected, Lived-In Home

March 27, 2024

Creating a collected, lived-in home consists of cultivating a space that feels comfortable, welcoming, and reflective of your individual personality and life experiences. Everyone admires the Nancy Meyers aesthetic, right?! I’ve come to learn this over the years of owning a home and am happy to share tips to make a home you love, while feeling true to you:

1. Start with a Vision:

Think about the atmosphere you want to create in your home. Consider your personal style, preferences, and the activities you enjoy when it comes to being in the home. Whether you prefer a cozy, rustic vibe or a more modern, minimalist look, having a clear vision will guide your decorating choices and I highly recommend relying on good ole Pinterest to refine your needs.

2. Curate Collections:

Start by going through all of your life’s collections and you will find that you have more decor than you think! Display your collections of figurines, books, artwork, or other items in a thoughtful way. Group similar items together and vary the heights and shapes for visual interest when it comes to a shelf, mantel or table. This not only adds personality to your home but also showcases your interests and passions to differentiate from the Target catalogue. These items add warmth and personality to your home and serve as conversation starters for guests – people always ask about our powder room art!

3. Mix Old and New:

This goes hand in hand with the above. Once you set aside everything you may want to incorporate, mixing in new when it comes to furniture, decor, and accessories can lean into your style. Vintage or antique pieces can add character and history to your home, while newer items keep the space feeling fresh and current. This mix is what gives you that individuality.

4. Layer Textures and Patterns:

This is an underrated tip as most people stop at just one layer. Incorporate a variety of textures and patterns to add depth and visual interest to your space. Mix soft fabrics like wool and velvet with natural materials like wood and rattan for a cozy, yet eclectic feel.

5. Create Cozy Corners:

Designate cozy nooks or seating areas where you can relax, read a book, or enjoy a cup of tea. Add soft blankets, throw pillows, and good lighting to make these spaces inviting and comfortable. Having these little pockets of cozy adds character to your home – something unexpected!

6. Embrace Imperfections:

The key is to NOT strive for perfection in your home decor. Embrace imperfections and quirks, whether it’s a slightly worn rug, original antique hardware, wood trim or a handmade piece. These imperfections add character and charm to your space.

7. Add Greenery:

As always,  plants and fresh flowers in your home bring life and freshness to your space. Plants not only improve air quality but also add color and texture to your decor – if they end up being faux, that is ok too!

It is a bit overstated but it’s because it is true – keep in mind that home takes time and creating a collected one certainly does! Trust your gut, lean into your likes and ultimately what makes you happy.
