10 No-Spend Ways to Refresh Your Home

August 2, 2023

If you’re a renter, just moved into a home, or are really focused on financials goals – this post is for you! We all get that itch to refresh or have an immediate need to give a space life, so, I thought it would be fun to give you some ideas and tips to refreshing without spending!

Here are some ideas to give your home that fresh feel without spending a dime!

1. Refresh Your Walls With Free, Printable Art

You may not know this, but the internet is full of free printable art. Check permissions for print, but they can come from artists’ websites or Pinterest. Easily give your walls a personal touch with sentimental items or places and easily print to a size that works for frames you already own.

2. Browse your Camera Roll

Another place to turn to for new decor is your camera roll! Print off photos seasonally to bring in those elements and happy memories from the past year or more. This one isn’t 100% free, but the photo labs at Walgreens and CVS are beyond affordable and fast!

3. Turn to Nature

On a nice day, head out on a nature walk to find greenery stems for accent vases or centerpieces. Upcycle old glass bottles from your favorite beer, wine, kombucha, etc. for a more personal touch.

Have your kids make art from materials you own – also serves as a way to purge unused craft items. There are a ton of really amazing simple, abstract DIY art pieces that end up looking beautiful on Pinterest.

4. Rearrange Furniture

Have a space that is just stumping you? Try rearranging the furniture. Could be as big as moving your desk or dresser to another wall, or simply shopping your home for a new corner of plants, a bench/side table and art. Switch up what you have going on at the ends of your sofa.

Bringing in accessories like lanterns, blankets, etc. can give this same feel to mix things up.

5. Shop Your Home

Any time I approach a new season or area is bugging me, I turn to items that I already have. It’s really challenging and fun, and can give you what you’re looking for if you have that creative itch! Whether it’s mixing up throw pillows, a staple piece on a shelf or in a corner, or layering with some subtle accents – you never know what item may become a favorite again! Go through your storage and pull things out to see what speaks to you. For example, I had unused basket weaved trays sitting in my basement and this holiday season, my large one became the anchor piece of my shelves! Not only does this save you money, but feels so good to work those creative muscles and get a win!

6. Restyle Floating Shelves

Sometimes less really is more, and if you have floating shelves above a couch, on an accent wall, or in your kitchen/bath, this can be the subtle refresh you need! Rearranging current pieces can even do the trick! If not, try bringing in one or two new staple pieces.

Though this post has some holiday tips mixed in, there are really good tips on how to properly style shelves here to check out!

7. Sell Unused Furniture & Decor

This is a time of purging and what better way to free up space than to sell unused furniture & decor? Facebook Marketplace is where I have the best luck! Use the profits towards new pieces or put towards savings to accomplish alternative goals.

8. Flip/Deep Clean your Rug

This truly can bring a room back to life. Every time I clean a rug I am beside myself as to how brand new it looks. The colors are more vibrant and the texture is brought back to life, giving your space new life! Sometimes flipping it does the trick depending on your texture of material and pattern.

We use this to clean all of our rugs and it works wonders!

9. Tame Your TV Wires

Another “almost free” tip depending on your solution. This is one of those things that everyone wants to do but doesn’t get around to it. Whether its taping loose wires to the back or bottom of a console, or getting supplies to mask them into the wall, you’ll feel so much better about your space by cleaning up the look below your TV!

We used this product and love how seamless it is!

10. Declutter!

If you’re an avid reader here, you may have seen my post on decluttering. This is a huge way to give a space new life by feeling clean & organized. Even cleaning off my desk gives me such a great energy as I walk into each work day.

Check out the post here to see how you can tackle each type of space!
